When it came time to file their tax return, Jason and Jana were in for a surprise. For a few months that year Jason had drawn unemployment. This was temporary while he transitioned from one job to another. At the time he drew the money he had not had any taxes held out. He thought that unemployment was tax-free. He was wrong, the tax forms asked for benefits drawn. These were listed under the heading unemployment benefits taxable income. Jason had drawn a considerable sum during those few months. As a result he now owed taxes in the amount of $500. This may not seem like a lot but to Jason and Jana it was a fortune. They had both had bad years as far as their jobs had gone. They were hoping for a tax refund in order to get caught up on some bills. Now they were going to have to figure out how to come up with this extra money. They consulted an accountant who reviewed the forms and found that yes; they did owe taxes on the unemployment. However, the accountant found some deductions and credits Jason had missed. In the end they ended up with a small refund. Not enough to pay off the bills, but at least they didn’t owe anything.
